PARTICIPANTS: Manual wheelchair users (N=12). INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Symmetry indexes for the propulsion moment, total force, tangential force, fractional effective force, time-to-peak propulsion moment, work, length of push cycle, and handicap scooters power during power wheelchairs propulsion over outdoor and indoor community conditions, and in laboratory conditions. RESULTS: Upper-extremity asymmetry was present within each condition. There were no differences in the magnitude of asymmetry when comparing laboratory with indoor community conditions. Outdoor community wheelchair propulsion asymmetry was significantly greater than asymmetry measured during laboratory conditions. CONCLUSIONS: Investigators should be aware that manual wheelchair propulsion is an asymmetrical act, which may influence interpretation when data is collected from a single limb or averaged for both limbs. The greater asymmetry identified during outdoor versus laboratory conditions emphasizes the need to evaluate wheelchair biomechanics in the user’s natural environment.

The ratio of the high frequency to total frequency (HF/TF) in the R-R interval decreased from supine (0.5 +/- 0.2) to sitting (0.3 +/- 0.2), and handicap scooters, medical scooters the low frequency (LF) power in systolic blood pressure increased from 4.7 +/- 9.1 to 15.0 +/- 13.1 mmHg(2) only in the untrained persons with tetraplegia (P < 0.01). The decrease in the HF/TF ratio in the untrained persons with tetraplegia indicates attenuated parasympathetic activity to the orthostatic challenge and the similar increase in LF power indicate that parasympathetic activity was reduced and sympathetic activity increased only in these persons. These results suggest that training enhances cardiovascular stability in tetraplegic subjects

The power wheelchairs outputs corresponding to fixed whole blood lactate concentrations of 2.0 to 4.0 mmol x l(-1) were calculated using linear interpolation. Mechanical efficiency indices - gross efficiency, net efficiency, and work efficiency - were also calculated. An analysis of variance with repeated measures was applied to determine the effect of crank mode on the physiological parameters. Oxygen uptake was on average 10% lower (P < 0.01), and both net efficiency (P < 0.01) and gross efficiency (P < 0.01) were higher, during the asynchronous strategy at both 60 and 80 W (gross efficiency: 16.9 +/- 2.0% vs. 14.7 +/- 2.4% and 17.5 +/- 1.8% vs. 15.9 +/- 2.6% at 60 and 80 W respectively). There were no differences in heart rate, blood lactate concentration or power output at either of the blood lactate reference points between the asynchronous and synchronous strategies (P > 0.05). In conclusion, test specificity is an important consideration. If a synchronous strategy is to be adopted, it is likely to result in lower efficiency than an asynchronous strategy. The exercise testing scenario may help dictate which method is ultimately chosen

Is the the 3-Day diet the miracle weight loss cure you need?
The 3-Day diet consists of eating an exact diet of foods, in exact proportions, to get a high amount of loss weight fast in 3 days. Do you see the same problem I see? It should be obvious immediately. How can the proportions be identical for a 120 pound woman, and a 250 pound man? Unless you’re planning on the man fainting in the middle of his work day, it seems highly unlikely that this could be possible. Of course, our 250 pound man is much more likely to lose weight fast for the 3-day diet than the 120 pound woman, because he is starving his body.
